The 2021 SIO International Annual Conference was our first hybrid annual conference - held in Baltimore and online September 25-27th. We want to deeply thank the SIO 2021 Planning Committee, and especially our Conference Co-Chairs, Linda Carlson Ph.D., R.Psych. and Channing Paller, MD. We especially want to thank our management staff for essentially planning two conference in one; it was not without challenges but in the end the conference experience was amazing. For some, it was their first flight in 20 months, through COVID border tests and vaxx checks, and we are so happy for those of you who made it there to see each other in person.
We also want to thank the sponsors of the conference: Johns Hopkins Medicine, the National Institutes of Health, Weil Foundation, Dr. Rogers Prize for Excellence in Complementary & Alternative Medicine, National Capital Cancer Research Fund, and GRYT Health. Exhibiting companies were Biocept and GRAIL. In total, we had 326 conference attendees, 109 of whom came in person to Baltimore. We also achieved excellent engagement and international reach, as per below:
- 83 Attendees from outside the US & Canada
- 24 Countries represented
- 268 Registered for pre-conference workshops
- 104 Presenters, including over 60 virtual presenters
- 41 Sessions, 11 Workshops, 46 Posters
- 13 Networking Lounges
Through generous grants from The National Capital Cancer Research Fund, NIH, and GRYT Health, we were able to award 60 conference scholarships, including 15 to international awardees, as detailed below:
- 15 International awardees from outside the US & Canada
- Of these 15, 3 were from LMIC (India and Kenya)
- Attendees reside in the Middle East (Israel, Iran), Africa (Kenya), Central America (Mexico), Europe (Italy, Greece, Cyprus, Poland, the Netherlands), Asia (India, Hong Kong), the UK, and Ireland.
- 45 from US and Canada
Congratulations again to the winners of the Twitter contest: Iris Zhi, MD, PhD won for in-person tweeting, Stephania Colasanti from Italy for best virtual tweeter, and Mel Mann, MBA, MEd, tweeter extraordinaire, generated 31.2 million impressions, earning him the top award for impact.
